This monograph began life as a Masters sub-thesis submitted in 1987 to the Department of International Relations at the Australian National University. Sections of chapter three were presented at the Auckland gathering of the Australasian Political Studies Association Conference in August 1987. Since then it has been revised to take into account developments up to the end of April 1988. However, New Zealand’s defence relations remain in a state of flux. The views expressed here could, no doubt, be subject to modification as new information and developments come to light.
