Withstanding Geopolitical Storms And Resolving Security Dilemmas: The Case of Georgia
H.E. Mr. Beka DVALI, Ambassador of Georgia to Australia and New Zealand
Monday, 5 May 2025 5:30pm - 6:50pm
Wellington
Rutherford House Lecture Theatre 2 (RHLT2), Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington, 33 Bunny Street, Pipitea, Wellington
The NZIIA Wellington Branch is delighted to invite you to a presentation on "Withstanding Geopolitical Storms And Resolving Security Dilemmas: The Case of Georgia”
Georgia, the country on the crossroads of Europe and Asia, has centuries-old history defined by continued struggle for maintaining sovereignty, territorial integrity, distinct cultural identity, unique Georgian language and alphabet, and the system of values deeply rooted into Christianity. Georgia regained its independence in 1991, after 70 years of involuntary incorporation into the Soviet Union, and embarked on the path of developing democratic republic with a parliamentary system, market economy, rule of law and respect for human rights and freedoms.
Georgia’s foreign policy focuses on forging global partnerships throughout every continent and region including Pacific, coupled with clear Constitutional priority of rapprochement with European and Euro-Atlantic institutions.
Georgia’s efforts of rebuilding independent state and pursuing foreign policy agenda, already for decades, have been challenged by Russian hybrid warfare, military aggression and continued illegal occupation of two Georgian territories - Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region. Russia’s war on Ukraine and accompanying regional threats triggered additional foreign pressures on Georgia, challenged state institutions and tested their ability of making sovereign decisions for upholding vital national interests.
Ambassador of Georgia H.E. Mr. Beka Dvali will reflect on Georgia’s path of state-building, multi-faceted reforms, defending sovereignty and territorial integrity, diplomatic outreach globally and in the Pacific, developing national security architecture, and against all odds, staying resilient in the current era of global geopolitical instability.
Doors Open: 5:05pm Q&A will be open to attendees.
