Our man in the Pacific
Pete McKenzie, NZUS Media Fellowship Winner
5pm, Monday 19 August 2024
Auckland
University of Auckland, The Great Hall, Building 105 (Clock Tower), Room 101, 22 Princes Street, Auckland.
This event is by invitation only.
The NZUS Council, in association with NZIIA Auckland Branch, invites you to attend a discussion with the 2024 NZUS Media Fellow, Pete McKenzie.
The Fellowship enables a New Zealand journalist with an interest in international affairs to visit the United States on a two-week research tour.
Pete McKenzie is a journalist who writes about New Zealand and the Pacific for The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post and The Economist, among other outlets. In 2023, Pete was named Reporter of the Year at the New Zealand Media Awards. He is the youngest reporter since 1981 to receive the country's highest journalist honour. This year, he was a finalist for both the Livingston Award in International Reporting, which honours the best reporting for American media by journalists under 35, and for Australia's Freelancer of the Year. Pete has a masters degree in global politics from Columbia University, which he attended as a Fulbright scholar, and a law degree with first class honours from Victoria University of Wellington. Before journalism, he worked as a judge's clerk in New Zealand's High Court and served as an infantry officer in the New Zealand Army Reserve.
Pete will share how geopolitical tensions between America and China in the Pacific are helping drive rapidly-deepening diplomatic ties between the United States and New Zealand. Pete visited the USA in April 2024 to research trends and developments that are relevant to the bilateral relationship. He met with a wide range of contacts and will share his findings.
There will be networking drinks following the discussion.
RSVP by 16 August to info@nzuscouncil.org.
