The EU and the Indo-Pacific
Richard Tibbels, EU Special Envoy for the Indo-Pacific
5.30pm-7.30pm, Wednesday 20 March 2024
National Office
Lecture Theatre 1, RHLT1, Rutherford House, 33 Bunny Street, Pipitea, Wellington (Please note the venue differs from that previously advertised)
The New Zealand Institute of International Affairs, together with the EU Delegation to New Zealand, is pleased to host ‘The EU and the Indo-Pacific’ with Richard Tibbels, European Union Special Envoy for the Indo-Pacific.
Richard will outline the EU's Indo-Pacific Strategy, highlighting the roles and contributions of the EU within the region. Since 2021 when the EU adopted its Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, the EU pursues partnership for our shared resilience via three key pillars: trade, climate action and security. This includes trade agreements, cooperation on digital transition and support for value chain diversification, building green transition partnerships, as well as tackling new security challenges. All this is underpinned by concrete projects in the Global Gateway initiative and regular political meetings – most recently the Third EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum and First Pacific Day, both held in Brussels in February 2024.
The discussion will be moderated by Georgina Roberts from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with an engaging Q&A segment allowing direct dialogue with Richard on the strategic interests and initiatives of the EU in the Indo-Pacific.
Ms Georgina Roberts is a career diplomat with Manatū Aorere-Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and is currently Divisional Manager, Asia Regional Division.
Ms Roberts joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2001, having worked previously for the National Archives, the Waitangi Tribunal and Te Puni Kokiri-Ministry of Māori Development. She has served in London, Pretoria, Addis Ababa, and as New Zealand High Commissioner to Vanuatu (2014-2017) and Solomon Islands (2020-2021). Across her foreign service career, Ms Roberts has worked on UN and Commonwealth multilateral issues, trade negotiations, and Pacific regional matters.
Ms Roberts is of Ngāti Porou, Ngāi Te Rangi, and Ngāti Kuri whakapapa/descent.
The event will be followed by a drinks and canapes reception.
Attendance is free. Pre-registration is required.
