The New Zealand Institute of International Affairs - Christchurch Branch invite you to attend a panel with Professor Alex Tan, University of Canterbury, Professor Chung-Min Tsai, National Chengchi University Taiwan, and Professor Kuei-jung Ni, National Yang Ming Chiao Tong University Taiwan.

Professor Alex Tan

Alex Tan is Professor of Political Science (University of Canterbury), Honorary Professor (NZ Defence Force Command and Staff College), Associate Director (NZ Contemporary China Research Centre), Fellow (John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies, USA), adjunct University Chair Professor of Political Science (National Chengchi University, Taiwan). He was member of the Public Advisory Committee on Disarmament and Arms Control (2019-21). At UC, he was head of department (2005-08, 2017-22) and recipient of teaching awards including the University Lecturer of the Year (2014), College of Arts (CoA) Lecturer of the Year (2014, 2017), CoA Teaching Excellence Award (2015), CoA Lecturer of the Year finalist (2013, 2019). He received his PhD (Political Science) from Texas A&M University, MA (Economics) from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and AB (Economics) from the Ateneo de Manila. Before joining UC, he is tenured associate professor at the University of North Texas, postdoctoral fellow at Southern Methodist University, banker with HSBC, and research fellow at Taiwan Institute of Economic Research. He was visiting scholar at universities in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, and Taiwan and represented NZ in Track II security/economic dialogues. Alex is chief editor of Frontiers in Political Economy and editorial board member of international academic journals such as Political Behavior, Politics and Governance, Political Science, Asian Survey, Issues and Studies, Journal of Asian Security & International Affairs, Croatian Political Science Review, Journal of Electoral Studies, and Korean Journal of International Studies. He writes extensively in the areas of parties & elections, political economy, Asian politics, and international relations of the Asia-Pacific.

Professor Chung-Min Tsai

Chung-Min Tsai is a Professor at the Department of Political Science and Associate Dean of the College of Social Sciences at National Chengchi University, Jointly Appointed Professor at Taipei School of Economics and Political Science at National Tsing Hua University, and the editor of Taiwanese Political Science Review. His academic interests include comparative politics, political economy, international relations of East Asia, and China studies.

Professor Kuei-jung Ni

Kuei-Jung Ni is Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Trans-Pacific Partnership and Transnational Trade Laws at School of Law, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. He specializes in international economic law, environment law, and bio-technology law. He has written dozens of articles appearing in trade, environment, and health law journals. Recent publications include “Food Safety and International Trade (2 nd ed.)” (Angle, 2022); “Food Safety and Technology Governance”, co-edited with Ching-Fu Lin (Routledge, 2022); “Science and Risk Analysis in CPTPP/SPS-Plus: Role Model or Unbearable Burden” (Journal of Food Law and Policy, Vol. 15(2), pp. 22-47, 2019). He was visiting Melbourne Law School, Harvard Law School, UC at Berkeley, School of Law. Professor Ni received his Ph.D. in law from the University of Edinburgh, an LL.M from the University of California at Berkeley, and an LL.B from the National Taiwan University.
