David Melville is an ecologist who has been studying migratory shorebirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway since moving from the UK to Hong Kong in 1974. He worked in Hong Kong for 21 years, as well as a year in Thailand and a year in India, before moving to New Zealand in late 1999. He has maintained strong links with Asia and pre-Covid was spending 2-3 months a year working on projects in China and DPRK.
The Bar-tailed Godwit migrates from New Zealand through East Asia to breeding grounds in Alaska, before returning to New Zealand. Migratory birds link many countries and provide opportunities for establishing relationships at many levels - including with the People's Republic of China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea where New Zealand godwits stage on their northward migration.
