2022 marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and New Zealand. His Excellency Dr Wang Xiaolong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to New Zealand, reflects on the history of the New Zealand-China relationship, discusses the current state of relations and provides an overview of China’s foreign policy.
The Ambassador’s address is discussed by Jason Young, Director of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre. with concluding remarks by John McKinnon, Chair of the New Zealand China Council and former New Zealand Ambassador to China. The event is chaired by Suzannah Jessep, NZIIA Board Member and Director Research and Engagement at Asia New Zealand Foundation. It will include a question and answer session and conclude with a drinks reception.

About His Excellency Dr Wang Xiaolong
Since 2021 His Excellency Dr Wang Xiaolong has been Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to New Zealand, the Cook Islands and Niue. His previous roles include Ambassador to Mongolia, and postings in Singapore and the United Nations. His other roles in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have included Director-General of the Department of International Economic Affairs, Special Envoy for G20 Affairs and Special Envoy for BRICS Affairs. He holds a PhD in Economics and is from Hebei Province.
About Associate Professor Jason Young
Jason Young is the Director of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre and an Associate Professor in the School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington. His research focuses on Chinese politico-economic and institutional reform, Chinese foreign policy and New Zealand-China relations. Jason is author of China’s Hukou System (Palgrave 2013) and a number of journal articles and chapters in both English and Chinese. Jason spent four years studying Chinese at Fu Jen and Tunghai Universities and travels regularly to China and Asia.
About John McKinnon
John McKinnon joined the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1974 and his overseas assignments include Washington DC, Canberra and New York. He served twice as New Zealand ambassador to China and Mongolia, the first from 2001 to 2004; the second from 2015 to 2018. In between he was successively a senior official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Secretary of Defence, and Executive Director of the Asia New Zealand Foundation. John McKinnon is now Chair of the New Zealand China Council and a Senior Fellow of the Centre for Strategic Studies, Victoria University of Wellington.
