Dr. Zsolt Hetesy is the Ambassador of Hungary to New Zealand since December 1,
2021. A lawyer by background, and a civil servant since 1992, he worked in different
leadership positions in the field of law, national security as well as in multilateral
and bilateral diplomatic relations.
Prior to New Zealand he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Hungarian
Embassy in Washington D.C. His previous diplomatic posts also include two stints at
the Hungarian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, first as legal
adviser and later as Deputy Permanent Representative.
Amb. Hetesy started his career in the Prime Minister’s Office, dealing with national
security law and administration. Between 2002 and 2010 he directed two Hungarian
national security services, first the Special Service for National Security, and starting
from 2007, the Information Office. He also acted as Hungary’s counterterrorism
coordinator in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade between 2010 and 2012.
Dr. Hetesy earned a PhD and a JD from the School of Law of the University of Pécs,
Hungary. He also holds a Master of Laws Degree (LLM) from the College of William
and Mary, Marshall Wythe School of Law, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA.
Dr. Hetesy is married to Dr. Katalin Hetesy and he is a proud father of two daughters.
