Ian obtained his Masters degree in history at Canterbury University in 1979. He was a diplomat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1979 to 2020. During his career, he served as New Zealand’s Deputy Ambassador in Washington DC from 2004 - 2009, and earlier in our missions in London, Suva and Nuku’alofa. His particular field of expertise is Russia, where he served three terms at our Embassy in Moscow, including twice as Ambassador in 2009 - 2012 and again in 2016-2020. Among a range of roles in the Ministry in Wellington, Ian was Divisional Manager responsible for Europe in 2012 - 2016, and earlier served as Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser in 1993-1995.
