NELSON: The Global Pandemic. What are the Lessons?

SPEAKER: Doctor Lance C Jennings MSc, PhD

In 2017 Lance retired as the Clinical Virologist at the Canterbury District Health Board and Director of New Zealand’s WHO National Measles Laboratory.  He is currently an advisor to the CDHB, and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Otago, Christchurch.  His PhD research focused on the epidemiology of respiratory viruses in Port Chalmers.  He carried out post graduate research on viruses and senile dementia in the UK, and rhinovirus infections in Wisconsin and Antarctica.  He was instrumental in the development of influenza control strategies for New Zealand including pandemic preparedness planning.  He continues to serve on several Ministry of Health and Pharmac technical advisory groups. 

He has been a member of the WHO/WPRO Avian Influenza Outbreak Response and Expert Influenza teams in Asia.  In 2002 he co-founded the Asia Pacific Alliance for the control of Influenza.  He remains as a Council Member of the International Society for Influenza & Other Respiratory Viral Diseases.  In 2006 he was appointed as a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order (QSO) in recognition of his service to virology in New Zealand and internationally.
