NELSON: Ed Hillary, humanitarian, adventurer and friend POSTPONED UNTIL A LATER DATE
Thursday, 17 September 2020 at 5:30pm
Nelson Golf Club, 38 Bolt Road, Tahunanui

SPEAKER: Dr James Wilson

Doctor James Wilson studied western philosophy and theology which cured him of any delusion he might have had, that the Christian God was calling him to be a Presbyterian minister.   Accordingly, he went to India to study Indian philosophy and religion where he obtained his PHd.  He taught comparative religion for 23 years at Canterbury University.

Through his love of mountaineering, Jim was invited on one of Ed’s early school-building expeditions in Nepal.  He spent the next 45 years helping Ed on these aid projects, and also accompanied him on many adventures, including the Indo/New Zealand jet boat expedition up the river Ganga in India.  Jim was one of the jet boat drivers, as seen in the film “Ocean to the Sky”.

During his talk Jim will show a rare short film of that famous trip featuring Sir Edmund Hillary.
