SPEAKER: Barney Riley (former Nelsonian)

Barney is currently our lead Negotiator in the MFAT’s Trade and Economic Group, responsible for New Zealand’s trade negotiations with China and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). 

Since 2001 Barney has worked on a wide range of issues at MFAT, from trade negotiations to climate change and international law.  Previous appointments include postings to the New Zealand embassies in Tehran and Geneva, and Ambassador to Egypt in 2014-2018 (where he was also non-resident Ambassador to Algeria, Lebanon, Libya, and Tunisia, and New Zealand Representative to Palestine).
