SPEAKER: Dr Sheila A Smith, Sir Howard Kippenberger Chair, VUW

Dr Sheila Smith is the 2019 Sir Howard Kippenberger Chair in Strategic Studies at the Centre for Strategic Studies, Victoria University of Wellington. 

She is an expert on Japanese politics and foreign relations, is senior fellow for Japan studies at the Council on Foreign Relations based in Washington DC. 

She is the author of Japan Rearmed: The Politics of Military Power, (Harvard University Press, 2019), and various books on Japanese foreign policy. 

Sheila teaches as an adjunct professor at the Asian Studies Department of Georgetown University and serves on the board of its Journal of Asian Affairs. Dr Smith has MA and PhD degrees in political science from Columbia University.
